The incident happened at a construction site at Elder Hall, at 2400 Sheridan Road on the Northwestern University campus.

Fire Division Chief Tom Janetske says the 55-year-old Highwood man trapped in the trench was conscious and speaking with rescuers when they arrived shortly after 6 p.m.

But due to the weight of the dirt he was unable to free himself from the 14 foot deep trench.

Firefighters using advanced training techniques along with special equipment carried on emergency vehicles freed the trapped construction worker within 26 minutes of arriving on scene, Janetske said.

The man was transported by Evanston Fire paramedics to Evanston Hospital for evaluation. Officials remained on the scene while the investigation continued. The work was being conducted by sub-contractors working for the university which is constructing a new lobby and elevator area connecting two existing dormitories at the site.
