Former 5th Ward alderman Mayme Finley Spencer died Tuesday of resperatory problems at The Mather in Evanston.

Spencer, 89, served two terms as an alderman in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She was instrumental in winning passage of Evanston’s fair housing ordinance and was the first African-American female alderman in the city.
