A former defensive tackle on the Evanston Township High School football team has been charged with raping a fellow student at the University of Miami.

The Miami Herld reports that Jeffrey Brown, 19, turned himself in to Coral Gables police Wednesday and was being held in the Miami-Dade County Jail.

Brown who was named an ESPNChicago.com Athlete of the Week last year was red-shirted by the University of Miami football team last season.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports Brown was suspended indefinitely from the team in the wake of the charges.

The woman who says Brown assaulted her reportedly said the incident happened in the early hours of April 30 after she returned with Brown to her dorm room after drinking so heavily she threw up and passed out.

An attorney for Brown says he “did not engage in any criminal conduct whatsoever on the evening in question.”

  1. Another headline for Evanston

Once again Evanston makes the Tribune and the Sun Times and the four major station tv news outlets.

Mr. Brown is presumed innocent until and all, but it sure isn't good PR for our city when he turns himself in wearing an ETHS athletic t-shirt. That would be about the fourth by-line in as many weeks by my count

1). Shooting at McDonalds (one Evanston juvenile as the perpetrator another as the victim)

2). The jewelry store robbery. (sort of a freebee here, could be any town and might not be an Evanston citizen)

3). Attempted armed home invasion (three Evanston youths, presumably neither one of the two mentioned above)

4). The so-called bag ban debate and the denial of the liquor liscence to a Tilted Kilt franchise Wow. We look absolutely ridiculous.

The first three prove that this isn't Mayberry. The fourth suggests that a good portion of our citizenry thinks that it is. Let's take the moral high-ground against an incredibly sexist restaurant while we continue to ignore the drugs gangs and violence plaguing our city (including our precious downtown). Foolish.

  2. God will set him free …..

God will reveal the truth . He is innocent until GOD say so .  I am praying for him and his family… GOD will set him free. I hate that this has happen to such a great young man…….. GOD GOT HIM……..
