Alderman Lionel Jean-Baptiste, 2nd Ward, told City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz that the building had been a community center and gathering place for young black activists in the late 1960s and ’70s from the city and Northwestern University.

He said that despite the deteriorated condition of the building it could be fixed up for reuse.

"Paint it off white and brighten it up and it would have a completely different look," Jean-Baptiste said.
