A fire in the 1400 block of Madison Street Friday night left four residents and their two cats displaced.
Division Chief Kimberly Kull says the fire was reported about 8:20 p.m. at the multi-unit residential building.
She says the first companies to arrive found heavy smoke and fire conditions engulfing two floors in the rear of the building but managed to put it out within 20 minutes and prevented it from extending to other areas of the structure.
The four residents managed to get out of the building themselves and firefighters removed two cats from the building. The American Red Cross provided emergency services for displaced residents. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.
Additional equipment and personnel from neighboring municipalities provided coverage at Evanston fire stations and assisted Evanston Fire Department personnel battling the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
