Evanston fire crews found a first floor unit on fire when they arrived at a four-story courtyard apartment building early this evening.

Deputy Chief Paul Polep says firefighters entered the unit and were able to extinguish the fire within minutes, keeping it from spreading to other units.

In searching the fire-damage unit they found two cats and two dogs. Three of them needed to be resucitated using specialized pet oxygen masks, and all four pets survived.

There were no other reported injuries, but residents of the apartment may be displaced because of the damage to the unit.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Evanston Fire Prevention Bureau.
