‘Friday Night Lights’ at ETHS

The Evanston Township High School Wildkits will play their first-ever night football game this Friday, Sept. 12

The event, under newly installed lights and on the stadium’s new artificial turf surface, will begin with an opening ceremony at 7 p.m.

The ceremony will feature two alums, Emery Moorehead, ETHS ’72, a member of the 1985 Superbowl-championship Chicago Bears and Zach Gilford, ETHS ’00, an actor best known for his role as “Matt Saracen” on the critically acclaimed NBC-TV show Friday Night Lights.

The updated Lazier field stadium, which also has a new 25-foot scoreboard, was made possible by the National Football League’s Grassroots Program and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation of Chicago, in concert with ETHS and donations from alumni and other community sources.

In addition to ETHS’s football, boys’/girls’ soccer and lacrosse teams, the new features will give a variety of programs a central location for games and practices. Junior Wildkits and High Ridge Chargers football, Team Evanston, Ole and AYSO soccer, and Lakeshore Lacrosse and Evanston Youth Lacrosse will all have free use of the stadium, making the facilities a community center for Evanston athletics. In all, over 2,000 Evanston youth will directly benefit from this new field.

The sophomore game begins at 5 p.m., followed by the Varsity game at 7:30 p.m. The ETHS athletic department will be pre-selling tickets ($3 adults, $2 students and children) this week to the football game against Maine West.

Students and the community may buy tickets in the main hallway during lunch periods on Thursday, Sept. 11, from 11 a.m.-1:15 p.m., and in the athletic office, Room G153, on Friday, Sept. 12, from 8am-3pm.

The ticket booths will open at the stadium on Friday at 4:30 p.m. for what school officials anticipate will be a sold-out game.
