For the first time since the blizzard hit Evanston Tuesday afternoon, garbage pickup resumed today.

Drivers from Groot Industries were out making what would have normally been Wednesday’s route pickups, and the city’s recycling crews were on the job as well.

City officials asked residents to give the crews a hand by shoveling out around trash cans snowbound in alleys.

The city Thursday sent snow plows down alleys to clear the way for the trucks — the first time the city has plowed alleys in town in decades. With smaller snowfalls the city counts on the garbage trucks to clear their own way and pack down the snow for residents trying to get cars out of their garages.

Normal Thursday pickups are scheduled for Saturday this week and pickups are scheduled to return to their regular schedule next week.
