City officials say a contractor doing excavation work near 2405 Oakton St. in Evanston broke a high-pressure gas main about 11 o’clock this morning.

There was no fire, but fire department personnel are on the scene and NICOR crews are working to repair the damage.

Resident within a six-block radius of the scene are being asked to keep their doors and windows closed because natural gas can cause dizziness and headaches.

Oakton Street will be closed from Dodge Avenue to McCormick Boulevard until repairs are completed.
