Evanston city officials say a large, low-pressure gas main broke yesterday as crews worked to install a new water main at Maple Avenue and Simpson Street.

Assistant City Manager Judy Aiello says the incident left about 300 customers without gas service last night.

She said NICOR crews and police and fire units were on the scene and that NICOR had set up its headquarters for the repair effort at the Civic Center, a block west of the incident scene.

She said the gas service would be off until crews can fix the broken valve and reset every customer’s service.
