Evanston firefighters were out this morning hosing down the trees and grass in Centennial Park along the lakefront as a fire prevention precaution ahead of Wednesday evening’s fireworks display.
Resident Shirley Conley, who snapped this photo for Evanston Now, says folks walking or riding their bikes through the park got a refreshing water mist — and a chance to see the rainbows created by the spray from the aerial hose, which was manned by firefighter Mehmedali Hasanov.
Weather forecasts call for continued hot weather through Independence Day and beyond.
Was this after 10:00 am?
I presume they weren't watering Centennial Park between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Don't they know it's illegal in Evanston because too much water evaporates when sprinkling the lawn during those hours? (Apprently it's not a problem on weekends and holidays, though. I guess the sun isn't as hot on those days.)

Watering time
I'm told the watering started about 8:30 a.m. The photo was taken before 10 a.m. Don't know exactly when the watering ended. But they'll be doing it again tomorrow. Perhaps you'd like to show up and check on it?
Fireworks
Just wondering why we aren't cancelling the fireworks this year given the fire danger and water limitations.
Thank you firefighters…
Saw it in action at about 8:30. The heat brings a new wave of snark to the city, I suppose.
Watering trees and fireworks
Wouldn't it make more sense to water closer to the time of the FW? How long before the sprayed water evaporates? Probably can't cancel FW this close to the 4th — contracts et al.
Calm down…
It is not a stretch to imagine that by watering well in advance will hydrate the trees, leaves and other foliage in the area… Good idea! Thanks EFD!
