Matt Gibson led the way for age group swimmers representing the YWCA Flying Fish and Ana Woods had the top finishes of the team’s senior swimmers at Illinois Swimming’s recent long-course summer championship meets.
At the Illinois Summer Age Group Championships, which were held July 28-31 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, Gibson, swimming in the 11-12 boys division, finished third in the 200-meter backstroke (2:26.17), fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:33.33), fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:09.49), and sixth in the 50 backstroke (32.34). He also finished 12th in the 50 butterfly, 14th in the 100 butterfly, and 15th in the 400 freestyle.
Teammate Lily Consiglio also made a strong showing in the 11-12 girls division, finishing 13th in the 50-meter butterfly (31.67) and 20th in the 50 backstroke (35.04).
At the Illinois Senior Championships, held Aug. 4-7 at the University of Chicago, Ana Woods paced the Flying Fish with a fourth-place finish in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke (1:15.88) and an eighth-place finish in the women’s 200 breaststroke (2:50.19).
Other finalists from the Flying Fish included Clio Hancock, 10th in the women’s 400 individual medley (5:20.31); Evan Ziolkowski, 11th in the men’s 200 freestyle (1:59.59), 12th in the men’s 100 free (55.06), and 22nd in the men’s 50 free (25.71); Andrew Lindburg, 15th in the men’s 100 breast (1:10.37); Hana Weber, 22nd in the women’s 200 breast (2:56.00); and Tommy Hackley, 26th in the men’s 400 free (4:25.25).
Sophia Girgenti and Kate Grossman also teamed with Woods and Hancock for the women’s 400 medley relay, placing 17th with a time of 4:47.27.
With more than 500 swimmers on the Flying Fish swim team and nearly 1,200 in its learn-to-swim program, Flying Fish Aquatics at YWCA Evanston/North Shore is one of the largest aquatics programs in Illinois.
