Girls edge Maine South in defensive duel


Dashae Shumate shot Evanston’s girls into the lead late in the third quarter with a clutch 3-point basket, then added two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to help the Wildkits hold off Maine South 23-20 in a defensive duel Friday night at Beardsley Gym.

Evanston improved to 18-6 overall and 5-3 in Central Suburban League South division play.

Evanston earned the No. 2 seed for the Class 4A Maine East Sectional tournament. According to pairings released Friday by the Illinois High School Association, the Wildkits will play in the Resurrection Regional tourney.

Coach Elliot Whitefield’s squad will meet the Glenbrook North-Amundsen winner at 6 p.m. on February 24 in a first-round regional game. Also in the field are No. 8 Resurrection and No. 10 Lincoln Park.

The regional championship game is set for Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. Winner of the Resurrectional Regional will meet the Niles West Regional champion on Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. at the Maine East Sectional.
