Evanston junior Anastasia Goncharova has earned a top 4 seed in singles for the Illinois High School Association Class 2A state tennis finals that begin Thursday at Palatine and two other northwest suburban sites.
Goncharova knocked off the No. 1 seed, Michelle Bacalla of Niles North, in the finals of the Niles West Sectional for the first sectional singles crown in ETHS school history. Also seeded in the top 4 are Asuka Kawaii of Palatine and Lahari Yelamanchili of Lyons Township.
Goncharova plays Rockton Hononegah sophomore Reagan Wells in the first round on Thursday at Palatine High School. First-round singles matches begin at 9 a.m. and will also be held at Prospect and Elk Grove.
Doubles competition will open Thursday at Palatine Fremd, Conant and Barrington. The Glenbrook North team of Colette O’Regan and Catherine O’Regan has been voted the No. 1 seed in doubles.
