Evanston Police say a middle-school-age participant in a youth camp brough a handgun to the camp Friday morning.

Officers were called to the camp at Evanston Township High School after the camper alerted camp staff that he was in possession of the gun and turned it over to the staff.

Cmdr. Ryan Glew says that after officers arrived they discovered that the gun was loaded.

He says the juvenile told detectives he took the gun to the camp to show his friends and apparently did not intend to harm anyone. Glew says its not clear at this time where the youth got the gun.

The camper has been referred to juvenile court for unlawful use of a weapon on school grounds.

Glew says police are continuing the investigation and ask anyone with information to contact the Detective Bureau at 847-866-5050 or Text-A-Tip to CRIME (274637) and then start your message with EPDTIP.

He says the department also encourages all students and parents to report suspicious school activity as it occurs to police and/or school officials.
