Police say they recovered a loaded gun from an Evanston man after a traffic stop Sunday night.
Police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says an officer responding to a call at 9:15 p.m. about a disturbance involving two men in a black Jeep in the 200 block of Hartrey Avenue saw a similar vehicle southbound on Dodge Avenue from Brummel Street and pulled it over for a traffic stop in the 7500 block of North Calfornia Avenue in Chicago.
Dugan says the officer noticed an odor of cannabis coming from the Jeep and the driver, Dewayne Martinez-Roberts, 22, of 2122 Dobson St. in Evanston,, admitted to having cannabis in his possession.
While conducting a search of Martinez-Roberts, Dugan says, officers recovered a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun from his jacket pocket along with about two grams of cannabis.
Dugan says the front seat passenger, Kenneth C. Sandy, 25, of 2107 W. Devon in Chicago, when asked to exit the vehicle, fled southbound on foot; but Evanston officers with the assistance of Chicago Police were able to locate Sandy and take him into custody in the 2800 block of West Birchwood Avenue.
Dugan says it turned out that Martinez-Roberts and Sandy had not been involved in the original disturbance call.
Martinez-Roberts now faces a felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon charge and misdemeanor charges for possession of cannabis and lacking a firearm owner’s identification card.
Sandy now faces a misdemeanor charge of resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
