The Zoning Committee of the Evanston Plan Commission is scheduled to consider tonight a ban on the retail sale of guns and ammunition in the city.

Update 5:17 p.m.: We’ve just received word that tonight’s meeting has been cancelled for lack of a quorum and has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

The ban proposal was recommended to the zoning group by the City Council’s Planning and Development Committee, and the council would ultimately have to approve the ban for it to go into effect.

The measure was suggested by Alderman Ann Rainey, 8th Ward, after the city agreed to eliminate its prohibition on the possession of handguns in town to resolve a lawsuit filed by the National Rifle Association after the Supreme Court ruled a similar ordinance in Washington, D.C., was unconstitutional.

The ordinance would add gun dealers to a list of businesses, including tattoo parlors, that are not permitted in Evanston.

The Zoning Committee meets at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave.
