Evanston police are still investigating the latest of a series of incidents over the last few days in which shots were fired in the area around Howard Street and Custer Avenue.

The incident under investigation happened Monday afternoon when two groups of young men were shouting at each other across Howard near Custer and one pulled out a gun and started firing.

No one apparently was hit, but drivers in cars who witnessed the shooting were shaken up by the incident.

Evanston Police Commander Tom Guenther says one person was taken in to custody nearby, in the 7500 block of North Damen on the Chicago side of Howard, but no charges had been filed as of late Tuesday afternoon.

In an incident Sunday evening at the Marathon gas station at 555 Howard St. Guenther says occupants of two cars at different pumps got into an argument and one man fired a shot at another — before both groups fled the scene in cars or on foot.

And on Saturday afternoon in the 300 block of Custer officers were called to an incident in which a man was seen shooting a gun. The man fled the scene and Guenther said police were unable to make an arrest.

About a dozen neighborhood residents turned out late Monday evening for a "positive presence" demonstration at Howard and Custer to protest the violence.
