Heartwood buys two adjacent properties on Dempster

The Heartwood Center has closed on the purchase of two properties just east of its Dempster St. headquarters.

The planned transaction was first reported by Evanston Now last month.

Nancy Floy, founder of the holistic health services center, says she plans to improve the appearance of the house at 1814 Dempster St., which will be used for additional office space, and that the parking lot at 1810-12 Dempster will provide much-needed parking for the center.

The house, Floy says, had been vacant for at least seven years and had become an eyesore in the neighborhood.

Just across the street, a successful Kickstarter campaign this summer raised more than $50,000 to turn the Perla Cafe into Curt's Cafe South, which is planned to provide job training for teenage mothers.

In addition a Starbucks is under construction at the Dempster-Dodge intersection and Valli Produce plans to take over the shuttered Dominick's supermarket.
