The National Weather Service has extended its excessive heat warning through Sunday — with afternoon highs in the mid 90s expected today and in the lower 90s on Sunday.

Overnight temperatures are expected to only drop to around 80 degrees.

Heat index numbers are expected to peak in the 105 to 110 degree range in the afternoon and are unlikely to drop below 90, even late tonight.

The weather service says the heat, humidity and sunshine will lead to hazardous conditions, especially for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.

If you have to be outside, the weather service says, wear light-weight and loose-fitting clothes and drink plenty of water.

In Evanston some city facilities will be open today as cooling centers.
