Heavy rain floods some streets

Evanston public works officials say more than four inches of rain has fallen in the city so far today and some streets are flooding and sewers are overflowing.

The problems are reportedly worst on the northwest side of town.

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District officials opened the North Shore Channel locks at Wilmette late this morning to allow excess water to flow into Lake Michigan and at last report the locks were still open.

But that hasn’t been enough to completely prevent flooding problems.

Officials say the city’s drainage system is designed to let water pond on the streets to reduce the load on sewers — which in turn reduces the chance of basement flooding.

They say that residents who experience basement flooding that may be the result of a sewer backup should call the Water and Sewer Division’s emergency line at 847-866-2942 during business hours or 847-475-6880 on nights and weekends.

They suggest also calling if water in the street doesn’t drain within four hours after rainfall ends.
