The news for much of the news business continues to be pretty grim.

The Chicago Sun-Times is offering itself up for sale to tronc, the truncated parent of the Chicago Tribune.

Make It Better, the North Shore lifestyle magazine, is contemplating killing off its print edition.

The now tronc-owned Evanston Review is a shadow of its former self.

Reporters and editors are laid off seemingly every day across the nation.

At Evanston Now we plan to counter that trend and expand our staff later this year. But we need your help to do it.

We’ve launched a new voluntary membership program, and we hope you’ll join

Over the last 11 years we’ve published over 21,000 news stories and countless event listings and other items as well as more than 30,000 comments from readers.

We’d been able to sustain that effort thanks to our advertisers.

But to grow to the next level we need direct support from our readers.

If you agree that locally-owned, independent news organizations are vital to a community, then please purchase an Evanston Now membership and support our work.

Bill Smith is the editor and publisher of Evanston Now.
