The Evanston Township High School board Monday night approved a $2.1 million bid for the first two phases of a multi-year project to renovate the school’s athletic wing.
According to a staff memo, the first two phases, scheduled for summer 2019 and 2020, involve renovation of the existing boys physical education locker room and student bathrooms, which are used for PE classes during the day and athletic activities after school. The project also improves the traffic flow from building Entrance #3 to the athletic offices.
A later project, tentatively planned for 2021, will renovate the girls locker rooms.
“The existing boys PE locker room dates back to 1966 and the adjacent team room shower areas are from 1924,” said Mary Rodino, chief financial officer. “Both areas have remained largely unaltered since being constructed, while student needs have evolved and changed.”

The new locker room layout will provide better student storage with larger lockers and improve student privacy by eliminating public group shower areas and creating single user stalls.
A more efficient layout provides for two new classrooms and one new storage room for the PE wing.
A new east-west corridor will improve building user circulation as well as visitor wayfinding from Entrance #3 and will be a place to showcase ETHS athletic achievements.

Phase 1 of the project is scheduled to start June 10 and end August 20, affecting the exterior parts of the campus near the Church Street tennis courts and athletic wing hallway, and will not interfere with summer school or athletic activities.
