Evanston police say a 51-year-old homeless man has been charged with stealing a package from the vestibule of an apartment building at 115 Clyde Ave.

Police Cmdr. Ryan Glew says that about 11:15 Monday morning detectives in the area saw Howard take a FedEx package, get on a bike and ride away.

Suspecting he had stolen the package, the detectives tried to stop Howard in the 300 block of Custer Avenue, Glew says, adding that Howard fled from the detectives on foot, dropping the package and a backpack. But he was apprehended a short time later.

Glew says the detectives found burglary tools including two screwdrivers and gloves in the backpack and recovered the package and confirmed it didn’t below to Howard. They also, Glew says, recovered video footage of Howard taking the package from the apartment building.

Howard now faces felony charges of burglary and possession of burglary tools and a misdemeanor charge of criminal trespass to a residence.

He’s being held in the Cook County Jail without bond stemming from a previous burglary arrest and has been issued a $100,000 D-Bond in this week’s incident.
