Evanston fire officials say roofers doing work at the main Northwestern University library building caused a fire that did minor damage to the building Thursday.

Fire Division Chief Tom Janetske says NU police called in the alarm shortly after 3 p.m.

When city fire units got to the building at 1970 Campus Drive, they learned that the roofing contractor’s employees had already managed to extinguish the blaze atop the five-story building.

Janetske says some water and smoke got into the building and students and staff were required to leave it for about an hour.
