A recently released federal database indicates emergency room patients will get speedier care at Evanston Hospital than at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services published the data, which is based on reports from the first quarter of last year.

But neither local hospital managed to beat the state or national averages across all five categories measured.

The report has drawn fire from hospitals in some other states, which said coding errors made it appear wait times were far longer than they were in reality.

The government report says timely emergency room care is essential for good patient outcomes and that delays before receiving care in the emergency department can reduce the quality of care and increase risks and discomfort for patients with serious illnesses or injuries.
