Carlos Mendez, assistant principal at Haven Middle School for the past year, has been named interim principal at Bessie Rhodes Magnet School for the coming school year.

After receiving word that Rhodes Principal Adrian Harries is leaving at the end of June, School Superintendent Hardy Murphy recommended the appointment.

“Mr. Mendez has demonstrated leadership as part of the Haven Middle School team,” Murphy said. “He is a man who is willing to listen,” and the Rhodes school families, while they are losing “one fine leader, they are gaining another.”

Mendez was  assistant principal at the Albany Park Mutlicultural Academy in Chicago from March 2007 to
August 2011. He also served as the Area One Math and Science Coach for Chicago
Public Schools from September 2006 through March 2007.

He holds a master’s degree in school leadership from Concordia University and a master’s in urban teaching from Columbia College as well as a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Florida International University.
