A kitchen fire on the second floor of a two-unit apartment building at 2017 Foster St. in Evanston late Sunday forced a dozen resident to flee the building.
Fire Chief Brian Scott says when crews arrived in response to the 11:07 p.m. call the fire was already extending into the attic, but the firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze within 30 minutes.
Fire and EMS companies from neighboring towns also responded to the scene.
Scott says paramedics transported one resident to Evanston Hospital for a minor back injury suffered from a slip and fall exiting the building.
Damage from the fire displaced both households and Scott says they’re being assisted by the Red Cross.
There were no reported firefighter injuries. Scott says the cause of the fire appears to be accidental but is still under investigation.
