La Principal, the new Mexican restaurant on Main Street in Evanston from the owners of Lucky Platter, opens for dinner service this evening at 5:30.

The restaurant, in the space at Main and Custer long occupied by Lupitas, will feature a simple menu of Mexican street food with a contemporary flair, says co-owner Derek Gaspar.

There’ll be tacos and tortas, sandwiches on bread from Hewn bakery, along with pozoli or Mexican stew and other dishes.

The restaurant will also have 10 beers on tap, most of them local, and a bar serving signature cocktails and other mixed drinks.

One feature of the new business — a walk-up window on Custer Street serving Mexican coffee drinks and churros, a donut-like deep-fried pastry rolled in cinnamon sugar to morning commuters — has already been open for a couple of weeks.

Gaspar and his partner Eric Young plan to add lunch service at La Principal later on.
