When someone rings your doorbell and says they must have access to your basement to fix a pipe, it may very well be a scam, residents discovered in the 2600 and 2700 blocks of Lawndale Avenue. There were also two more reports of gunshots heard in the 1800 block of Darrow Avenue. These among stories in today’s crime bulletin from Evanston police.

BURGLARY

2600 Lawndale

A resident in the 2600 block of Lawndale Avenue was distracted when someone came to her door at about 3:55 p.m. Friday and said they needed access to her basement to fix a pipe. While she was distracted, an accomplice entered the house and ransacked the bedroom.

2700 Lawndale

A resident in the 2700 block of Lawndale discovered an intruder in his basement at about 5 p.m. Friday who erroneously said he was there about a broken pipe.

ARSON

800 Emerson

Someone broke a window and threw an incendiary device into a home in the 800 block of Emerson Street between 9 p.m. and 10:36 p.m. yesterday.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

300 Dodge

Someone threw a bottle at a 2008 Honda in the 300 block of Dodge Avenue around 9 p.m. Saturday.

Ridge at Davis

The mirror on a police car was damaged at 2:20 p.m. yesterday at Ridge Avenue and Davis Street.

2600 Sheridan

A sign was damaged on the sidewalk in the 2600 block of Sheridan Road around 9 a.m. Saturday.

CRIMINAL TRESPASS

1927 Church

Monique D. Cavallero, 51, of 2121 Dewey Ave., was arrested at 1927 Church St. at 2:36 a.m. Saturday and charged with criminal trespass of a vehicle. She is due in court on June 21 at 9 a.m.

OTHER

1454 Elmwood

Benjamin Stephens, 68, of 6118 S. Wood St., Chicago, was arrested at Evanston police headquarters at 2:01 p.m. Tuesday and charged with failure to register as a sex offender.

SHOTS HEARD

Lake at Sherman

Gunshots were reported at Lake Street and Sherman Avenue at 11:45 p.m. yesterday. Police checked the area but found nothing.

1800 Darrow

Gunshots were reported in the 1800 block of Darrow Avenue at 9:44 p.m. Friday and at 9:22 p.m. Saturday. In each instance, police checked the area and found nothing.

THEFT

1200 Elmwood

A gray 2008 Nissan Altima delivery truck was stolen in the 1200 block of Elmwood Avenue at 7:14 p.m. Saturday.

1900 Dempster

A gray 2003 Hyundai delivery truck was stolen in the 1900 block of Dempster Street at 3:18 p.m. yesterday.

2700 Bennett

Someone used keys to steal a red 2011 Honda Pilot from a driveway in the 2700 block of Bennett Avenue at 7:44 a.m. Friday.

700 Hinman

Someone stole a green Trek bicycle from an open garage in the 700 block of Hinman Avenue around 3:30 p.m. Friday.

2400 Nathaniel

A laptop computer was stolen from a residence in the 2400 block of Nathaniel Place at 10:46 a.m. Friday.

2000 Pratt

Shoes were taken from a residence in the 2000 block of Pratt Court between 10 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. yesterday.

2400 Howard

Food was taken from the Jewel-Osco grocery store in the 2400 block of Howard Street at about 4:45 p.m. yesterday.

1100 Chicago

Grocery items were taken from the Jewel-Osco store in the 1100 block of Chicago Avenue at 11:18 a.m. Saturday.

600 Chicago

Toiletries were stolen from the Walgreens Pharmacy in the 600 block of Chicago Avenue around 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Incidents listed appear among the official reports of the Evanston Police Department. An arrest does not constitute an assumption of guilt, which can only be determined by a court of law. Court appearances take place in Cook County 2nd District Court in Skokie.
