Evanston’s Smylie Brothers Brewing Company claimed a Bronze medal last weekend at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival competition in Denver.

It was one of 275 prizes handed out at the event to craft brewers from across the nation. Smylie Brothers was one of only four Illinois brewers to win an award.

Smylie Brothers Brewing Co. was recognized in the Fruit Wheat beer-style category for its Purple Line, a Bavarian wheat ale brewed with hibiscus, blueberry, and blackberry.

“In general, I think we’ve got some great beers in our lineup, but Purple Line, in particular, is a fun summer seasonal for us.” said Smylie Brothers head brewer Brad Pulver. “I couldn’t be happier people are digging what we do. I’m super proud of our Brew Crew.”

Pulver calls Purple Line tart, fruity and super refreshing. It gets its name from the brew pub’s proximity to the CTA Purple Line and from Northwestern University, whose team colors inspired the train line’s name.

The 2015 GABF competition winners were selected by an international panel of 242 expert judges from the record number of 6,647 entries, plus 91 Pro-Am entries, received from 1,552 U.S. breweries.
