Evanston police say officers recovered a .40 caliber handgun and have a 23-year-old Evanston man in custody after an incident that started outside the Buffalo Joe’s restaurant on Clark Street last night.

Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says Neighborhood Enforcement Team detectives following up on a gang and weapons investigation located a vehicle in the alley near the restaurant shortly before 8 p.m..

As the detectives approached the vehicle, one occupant fled on foot — only to be captured by police in the parking lot of the Burger King a block east on Clark where officers say they also recovered the weapon..

Dugan says other occupants of the car ran into Buffalo Joe’s, where they were taken into custody. They were taken to the police station and later released.

More information on the incident is expected later this afternoon.
