Evanston police say a call from a local resident led to the arrest this week of a suspected auto burglar.

Responding to a call about a man trying door handles of cars in the area of Clyde and Brummel about 4 a.m. on Monday, officers spotted a man getting out of a parked car in the alley east of the 100 block of Callan.

Police Cmdr. Tom Guenther says the officers reported the man looked startled when he saw them and began to back away as if he was about to flee.

Guenther says the officers found a yellow cigarette lighter on the man, which turned out to have been taken from the car.

The man, Stephen Anthony Craig, 53, of 605 Case #11 in Evanston, now faces one felony count of burglary to a vehicle. He’s scheduled to appear in Skokie district court on March 22.
