Evanston police say a next-door neighbor has been charged with first degree murder in the beating death of a man over the weekend.

Ricardo E. Munoz, 35, of 1225 Dodge Ave., appeared at a bond hearing this morning before Judge Marcia Orr who ordered him held on $700,000 bond.

Munoz is accused of beating Juan L. Sanchez, 34, during a party late Saturday night. Sanchez was found dead in his bed in his basement apartment at 1223 Dodge Ave. by friends on Sunday afternoon.

Police say that while no weapon was used, Munoz struck Sanchez several times, which caused multiple injuries and internal bleeding that led to his death.

Witnesses reportedly told police that both men had been drinking and were intoxicated at the time of the fight.

Munoz is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. Aug. 11 in Skokie district court.
