A 45-year-old Evanston man and his dog were both shot before dawn this morning while the man was out walking the dog in the 1700-block of Brown Avenue.

The man reportedly told police that as he neared the intersection of Church Street and Brown about 4:45 a.m. he heard two shots ring out and discovered he’d been hit on the right side of his abdomen.

The dog was also struck by a bullet that may have passed through the victim.

Police say the victim managed to cross Church Street and lie down on the parkway on the north side of Evanston Township High School.

He called for help on his cell phone and was able to speak to police and ambulance crews at the scene.

Deputy Police Chief Joseph Bellino said in a news release that the man was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery for two gunshot wounds. The dog was taken to a local animal hospital where he was treated.

Both the man and dog are expected to recover, Chief Bellino said. A police investigation of the shooting is continuing.
