Evanston police responding to a citizen report of two men checking door handles looking for unlocked cars found two men who matched the description of the suspects about 9 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Colfax Street and Ashland Avenue in north Evanston.

Cmdr. Tom Guenther says when one of the men noticed the officers, he dropped a purse he’d been holding.

After the police stopped the men they found they also had a TomTom GPS unit and a charger. They also were identified by a witness as the men who’d been trying to enter the unlocked cars.

The men, identified as Leroy imanuel Anderson, 21, of 8337 S. Drexel in Chicago, and Cary Founntain, 18, of 1315 Fowler Ave. in Evanston, now are facing misdemeanor theft charges, after police traced the purse to a Skokie woman who said it was taken from her unlocked car parked in her driveway.

The two suspects are due in Skokie district court at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 14.
