Evanston police blocked off traffic on Davis Street downtown this afternoon after a man jumped from the Sherman Plaza garage.
Fire Division Chief Dwight Hohl says fire crews, who received the call at 4:19 p.m., worked to save the man, but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at Evanston Hospital.
The victim is described as a 22-year-old white male.
Hohl says it’s believed the man jumped from the 12th-floor roof of the garage.
Police tape blocks off the sidewalk where the victim fell.
Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott says the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
Update 6:41 p.m. 11/13/13: The man who jumped to his death has now been identified as Caleb Dayton, a former Northwestern University student originally from Minneapolis and a grandson of Douglas Dayton, one of the founders of Target. More his NU connection from the Daily Northwestern.
Preventive measures?
There are cameras all over that garage, the feeds from which are monitored live, on location — I've seen the monitoring bay. Although I suppose this tragedy could have occurred with little forewarning, I have to wonder about the preventive measures the garage security personnel could have taken, if any.
Rest in Peace
This is so sad. My heart and prayers to the family and friends. WOW right here with all the holidays coming. How said.
May he rest in peace now.
