Evanston firefighters transported an elderly man to Evanston Hospital this morning after he nearly drowned while swimming at Lighthouse Beach.
Fire Chief Greg Klaiber says the man was swimming with his wife about 8:30 a.m. When she got out of the water, she noticed that he was still in the water, face down.
She and other people at the beach were able to pull the victim from the water and started CPR, Klaiber said.
By the time paramedics arrived, the man had a pulse, but was unresponsive.
Klaiber says that at last report the man was reported in extremely critical condition at the hospital.
