Evanston police say a man stepping out of a car early this morning on Howard Street was shot several times by two gunmen.

Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott says the incident happened about 1:50 a.m. in the 1900 block of Howard, near Dodge Avenue.

The victim, a 20-year-old Evanston resident, was taken to St. Francis Hospital where he’s reported to be in critical condition.

He underwent several hours of surgery and reportedly was under police guard.

Parrott says the victim appears to have been intentionally targeted by his assailants and that police believe the shooting may be in retaliation for the incident in which 19-year-old Justin Murray was fatally shot on Thursday, Nov. 29.

A funeral service was held this morning for Murray at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ.
