Frank Jefferis was elected president of the Friends of Evanston Farmers Markets at the organization’s annual meeting this week, succeeding Vikki Proctor.

Other officers elected were Sheldon Proctor, secretary, and Rene Sheikh, treasurer.

Board members elected, and their principal responsibilities, were Nancy Burhop, marketing; Ann McMahon, chef demonstrations; Vikki Proctor, education; and Emily Guthrie, membership.

Appointed webmaster for the organization was Mark Dolnick.

The group was formed two years ago to help educate the public about the benefits of eating fresh, locally produced foods and to advocate greater access to healthy foods for all, regardless of means.

Among the organization’s accomplishments cited for the past year was the distribution of nearly $15,000 in matching funds to LINK clients that enable low-income families to purchase fresh produce at the Evanston farmers markets.

It was instrumental in establishing the Winter Market at the Evanston Ecology Center, which will be held on Saturdays from Dec. 1 through April 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
