The District 65 School Board has appointed Marquise Weatherspoon to fill the vacancy created by the resignation in April of Rebeca Mendoza.

Seven residents applied for the position and were interviewed by the board on June 1. The other applicants were Erik Petersen, Nadia Gronkowski, Darlene Cannon, Jacqueline Lee, Jim Iorio and Tracy Olasimbo.

Weatherspoon finished fifth among eight candidates in April’s election for four seats on the school board.

In a news release, the District said Witherspoon is a third generation resident of Evanston who attended District 65 schools and is a single mother with four children who have been or currently are students in the district.

She holds a degree in business accounting and works in sales and customer service. She serves as president of Advocates for Action, treasurer of Chute PTA and as a minister at Christ Temple Missionary Baptist Church.

Her term will run through the April 2023 election.
