Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl says she plans to hold a community meeting to seek the views of 2nd Ward residents on qualities they’re looking for in a new alderman.

With Alderman Lionel Jean-Baptiste resigning to accept an appointment as a circuit court judge, Tisdahl must appoint a new alderman for the ward to serve through April 2013

Tisdahl, in a letter, said the 2nd Ward is very diverse in terms of age, ethnicity and race, and the next alderman “has to be a good listener, a good mediator and have a thick skin.”

The community meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Evanston Township High School in Room A241 on the 2nd floor. Parking is at the back of the school and attendees should enter the building at exit 31.

Tisdahl says she plans to announce the appointment of a new alderman at the Feb. 28 City Council meeting.

The mayor says Jean-Baptiste has served the city with distinction “as a tireless advocate not only for his residents, but for the larger Evanston community in many important areas.” and that his appointment to the Cook County Circuit Court will allow all county residents to benefit from his good judgment and understanding of issues faced by all members of our community.
