Evanston American Legion Post 42 will host a community reflection and ceremony honoring America’s fallen members of the armed services at Fountain Square on Monday, May 27, at 10:30 a.m.

The ceremony will return to the newly redesigned square with its new war memorial wall after being relocated to Patriot Park on the lakefront while construction work was underway in the square at Sherman Avenue and Davis Street.

The Monday holiday will affect a number of city services.

  • No trash collections will occur on Monday, May 27. Monday through Thursday trash, yard waste and recycling collections will occur one day later in the week than normal. Friday condo recycling collections will occur as usual on Friday, May 31. 
  • Parking meters, pay boxes and downtown parking garages will be free on Memorial Day. In addition, areas that have signs that prohibit parking except on holidays will permit parking that day.
  • Facility closures.
    • The Civic Center, the Chandler-Newberger Center, Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center, Evanston Ecology Center and 311 Center will be closed Saturday through Monday.
    • All Evanston Public Library locations will be closed Sunday and Monday.
    • The Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, Levy Senior Center, Robert Crown Center and Noyes Cultural Arts Center will be closed Monday.
  • All Evanston beaches open for the season Saturday and will be open on Memorial Day. Beach admission fees apply.
