Hundreds of volunteers from the National Education Association joined with the Evanston-Skokie School District 65 community today to rehabilitate Dawes Elementery School in Evanston.

Many of the NEA volunteers were in the Chicago area to attend the NEA’s Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly.

Hip-hop music from a local radio station blasted outside the school at Dodge Avenue and Oakton Street as some volunteers laid down wood chips for the playground, while others re-sodded some of the plants.

Becky Mayer, an NEA director from Ohio, said, “It is just a good thing to do.” Becky said. Evan Thomas, a volunteer from Skokie, said, “My little sisters may be going to school here at some point, so I came with my family to fix it up a bit.”
