Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl was on hand this afternoon to help cut the ribbon at the opening of the new Frio Gelato shop at 1701 Simpson St. in Evanston.
Frio Gelato has been selling on a wholesale basis to several Evanston restaurants for some time, but the retail storefront is a new addition to the business.
Frio offers more than a dozen gelato flavors and a chocolate dipping sauce for its gelato-filled waffle cones.
The business specializes in the style of gelato produced in Argentina, where cousins and owners Sebastian Koziura and Enrique Schcolnik were born.
The gelato is made in a nut-free facility and all flavors are gluten-free. Koziura says the business uses hormone-free milk and no ready-made bases or artificial flavoring.

Customers line up to try the gelato.
The owners say they contriubte a percentage of their profits to countries in need, including Argentina, partnering with VisionAR, a non-profit that helps outstanding students of limited financial means achieve their career goals by providing monthly stipends to cover education costs.
