High school seniors who submitted admission deposits to Northwestern University by the May 1 deadline have the highest average SAT scores and class ranking in the school’s history.
“The 2,182 students who accepted Northwestern’s offer of admission have an average SAT score of 1442, compared to the previous high of 1428 set last year,” said Michael Mills, associate provost for university enrollment. “A total of 91.5 percent of the students rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class, compared to 83.8 percent a year ago.”
The students who made deposits include 5.5 percent African-Americans, compared to 3.7 percent last year, and 6.5 percent Latinos, unchanged from last year. The number of international students increased from 5.2 percent to 6.6 percent.
More students in the incoming class were admitted with Federal Pell Grants, 9.6 percent compared to 5.9 percent last year. A total of 5.7 percent of the students were admitted with No Loan Pledge scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to undergraduates with the greatest institutional need so they have the opportunity to graduate from Northwestern without borrowing any need-based loans.
A small number of students is expected to withdraw their applications before the fall as in past years, but the final enrollment is expected to meet the University’s target of 2,025 freshmen. That means that fewer students are likely to be admitted from those on a waiting list, Mills said.
