The Evanston/Skokie School District 65 board has named a new principal for Dewey Elementary School.

He’s Andalib Khelghati, now an assistant principal at the Reavis Elementary School in Chicago. He’ll start at Dewey on July 1.

Before his current job at Reavis, Khelghati was a literacy leader and 6th grade teacher at Eugene Field Elementary School in Chicago.

Khelghati graduated with honors from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a bachelor’s degree in Social Thought and Political Economy.

He has a master’s degree in elementary education from Columbia University and is pursuing a doctorate in urban leadership in the education school at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Khelgati has been involved in educational leadership projects in Japan, Israel, Guinea and England.

He is fluent  English, Farsi, and French and plans to learn Spanish over the summer!

Dewey parents are also planning a “best wishes celebration” for the school’s former principal, Andrew Krugly at the Celtic Knot this weekend.

The school board on Monday also named two assistant principals at Haven Middle School who will start work there in late August.

They are Jennifer Laughlin, who’s now a District 65 middle school literacy coach, and Carlos Mendez, an assistant principal at Albany Park Multicultural Academy in Chicago.
