New signs are finally up today on northbound Ridge Avenue near the Metra viaduct to help drivers figure out what street they’re about to be shuffled onto.
Many drivers have complained that the reconfigured traffic pattern through the complicated intersection of Ridge with Green Bay Road and Emerson Street has left them stuck in the wrong lane for wherever they’d hoped to end up going.
City officials say they hope the new signs will help reduce the confusion.
Installation of the new sign had been delayed until recently by our cold wintery weather.
New Signs
The “Middle arrow” on the sign on the pole appears to be telling drivers that they can only turn left. Shouldn’t this be the lane for Green Bay traffic
Good point
… would benefit from a “left oblique” arrow symbol there.

Traffic Lights
I don’t know who is engineering the traffic design at these intersections. The signage at Emerson is dangerously wordy; the flashing lights impair vision. A bad situation made worse. Unless one knows and hs studies the road signage there, dangerous confusion is the inevitable result. Universal and simple signage is what’s required for the safety of all.
Noticed it today
I noticed the change today. It didn’t prevent a driver in front of me from being in the Emerson lane when s/he wanted to go on Green Bay.
Traffic management
Well, This can only improve the situation since it can hardly get any worse. Driving through that intersection has been like driving through the worlds largest pinball machine since the change.
The mismatched signs are just one more example that this is not getting much attention from those responsible….
GB?
Agree with all the comments, and also, I’m always bemused by the info painted on the road, including “GB.” If it’s not obscured by snow or another vehicle, how would a driver brand new to the area quickly know what it means?? Good boy? God Bless? Go Back???
Why didn’t they use a roundabout?
This would have been an excellent location for a roundabout (i.e. traffic circle). They keep traffic flowing, are much safer and cheaper to operate since you don’t need lights.
We do have some roundabouts in the city already–although, stupidly, they have stop signs, which defeats the whole point.
