Brubeck’s La Fiesta de la Posada

Dave Brubeck’s Christmas work, "La Fiesta de la Posada," will be presented on Sunday, Dec 21, at 10:30 a.m., at Lake Street Church of Evanston, 607 Lake St,

Bonnie H. Campbell will conduct choir, mariachi-style orchestra and soloists in this choral worship service. The Posada is a re-enactment of Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging and is a part of many Christmas celebrations in Mexico, Guatemala, and parts of the U.S Southwest.

The choice of the choral work complements Lake Street Church's recent decision to become a "sanctuary" church, in solidarity with immigrants from Latin America and beyond.

Founded in 1858, Lake Street Church is welcoming and affirming and includes members from 16 spiritual traditions.

Having grown up in southern California, jazz great Dave Brubeck heard and appreciated Mexican folk music. Its influence is heard strongly in this work that retells the Christmas story with scriptural texts chosen by his wife, Iola.

In addition to the influence of Mexican folk music, Brubeck’s jazz and classical skills, as well as his delight in rhythmic play and his sensitivity to text make this work a celebration for participants and listeners alike.

Brubeck arranged the work for various choral and instrumental combinations. Lake Street Church will present the setting for SATB choir, children's choir, and soloists with piano, harp, two violins, two guitars, two trumpets, string bass, and extensive percussion.

Lake Street's Chancel Choir will be joined in this concert version of the work in by the Amadeus Ensemble and other Chicago instrumentalists, community singers, and soloists Vikkie Holland and Carol Watkins, (soprano); Dominique Frigo of the Chicago Symphony Chorus; and three men from the Lyric Opera Chorus: Ken Donovan (tenor), Ronald Watkins (baritone), and Ken Nichols (bass). In addition, Lake Street’s historic Victorian Gothic sanctuary will be transformed by artist Gale Hartman and LSC’s youth and children.

This choral service is made possible by the Daniel Jones Memorial Fund, established by Dorothy and Bob Jones in memory of their musician son Daniel, to help Lake Street Church offer free public performances of major choral works with orchestra.
