The City of Evanston will host its seventh annual “Evanston Recycles” event on Saturday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to noon at Evanston Township High School, 1600 Dodge Ave.

The free “drive up, drop off” event provides residents an opportunity to recycle and donate a variety of items and securely shred documents. This year’s expanded event will accept additional items, including bicycles, flags, keys and more.

Residents who bring items to recycle or shred are asked to follow the signs and remain in their cars as City staff unload the items. Electronics recycling and document destruction are open to residents of all Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County communities. Participants are asked to not line up before 8 a.m.

Electronics equipment that will be accepted for recycling include cell phones, desktop and laptop computers, computer monitors, DVR and cable boxes, DVD and VHS players, fax machines, computer mice and keyboards, MP3 players and PDAs, printers and scanners, televisions and video game consoles.

Other items that will be accepted include clean, dry and empty vases; batteries (except vehicle batteries); fluorescent light bulbs (small fluorescent bulbs should be placed in sealable plastic bags); plastic grocery bags and other plastic film; shoes, clothing and textiles including flags; bicycles and bicycle parts; books; reusable bags; eyeglasses and sunglasses, pop tabs, keys and hearing aids.

Residentially generated, unused prescriptions and expired over-the-counter drugs, including controlled substances, will also be accepted for disposal in household quantities. Medicines must be in labeled containers; no loose pills. Multiple medicine bottles should be transported in a clear re-sealable storage bag. No used or new needles or syringes will be accepted.

Residents can bring up to five banker’s boxes of paper documents to be shredded on site. Documents should be placed in a box or brown paper bag and large metal clips and binders should be removed ahead of time. Staples and paper clips are acceptable. Document shredding is not available for businesses.

The City’s “Evanston Recycles” event is supported by the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County, NorthShore University HealthSystem, Stericycle, Evanston Sunrise Lions Club, Evanston American Legion Post 42, Random Acts of Flowers, Goodwill Evanston and the Recyclery.

  1. This is a great event

I went there for the first time last year.
I showed up around 9:30am but by that time the line of cars had stretched east from the Lake St entrance, up north on Dodge, then west on Church to the other entrance to the school. I thought I would be there for hours, but because this was so well organized, the line moved fairly quickly and I went from the back of the line to the exit in just about 30 minutes.
